elevator-ride conversation topic=causual, non-essential, social topics. Imagine yourself going to work every morning having to ride the elevator up to your office. You meet your co-workers. You say good morning, then what do you talk about next? You don't just keep silent; that would be awkward. You would say trivial things like "The weather is bad again today",  "Did you watch the football game last night? It was exciting, wasn't it?", "...and things that usually last only 5 to 20 seconds. You would not talk about long topics and deep theological or philosophic idea, would you?
